Science fair project… due date: 5.13.11

The purpose of our project was to figure out which hard candy (such as: jolly ranchers, blow pops, tootsie pops, and life savers) dissolve the quickest or the longest in each type of liquid (such as: sprite, water, water with salt, and vinegar. We found out during our experiment that the life saver dissolved the quickest in all the liquids (water: 47 minutes, 50 seconds, vingar: time: 59 minutes and 20 second, sprite:1 hour, 23 minutes, 15 seconds, and water with salt: 1 hour, 13 minutes, 16 seconds) and the blow pop in all the liquids dissolved the slowest (Sprite: 3 hours, 0 min, 28 seconds, vinegar: 6 hours, 3 minutes, 4 seconds, water with salt: 9 hours, 17 minutes, 36 seconds, water; 5 hours, 5 minutes, 32 seconds.

our hypothosis was wrong because we guessed that the jolly rancher would take the shortest to dissolve in vinegar but really the life saver took the shortest to dissolve in all the liquids. We found out that the life saver took the shortest to dissolve in all the liquids and this was because it was less and lighter ingridents so that must of made it take a very short time to diapear. The blow pop probably took the longest because it has gum in the middle and gum takes a long time to diapear.

We learned that the life saver takes a short time to dissolve in all those kinds of liquids and we learned that the blow pop takes the longest to dissolve out of all the liquids. We also learned that the life saver is smaller and has lighter ingredients so that is probably why it took a shorter time, and we also learned that the blow pop is bigger and has more ingredients so that is probably why it took a longer time. The blow pop has gum in it so that is probably why it took longer to because gum does not really dissolve, so we ended up timing it to the time that all the hard candy was gone and only gum was left. We learned that the life saver dissolved the quickest in all the liquids but the one that made it take a really short time to dissolve in is water. This is probably because water unlike sprite, slatwater, and vinegar does not have  all these added surgars and fats so in water since it is all natural it would allow most things to dissolve quick. Also blow pops, toostsie pops, and jolly ranchers all have a lot of fat ingridents and are much bigger than life savers so that is probably why the life saver dissolved quick.

This outcome makes sense because the life saver is smaller so that is reasonable that it took the shortest, and the blow pop is the biggest and has a lot of gum in it so it is reasonable that it took the longest. I think we should of added more selections in candy and liquids, and i think we should of planned it better than we did. We did not detrime or find anything that should have been redone or revised. Some of the questions we had during our experiment was... how long it would take different candies or food to dissolve in different liquids

We could use this conclusion in our life and in others, because if you want a long term candy in your mouth you would use the blow pop, if you want a short time candy in your mouth then you should have a life saver. The people would want to know this because if they just want a quick snack before they go out somewhere then they should use a life saver or a jolly rancher, or if they want a snack to last long because they are chilling at home then they would choose the blow pop or the tootsie pop. In our experiment we had trouble figuring out which candy and liquid to get.

Procedure:

  1. Choose 4 hard candies and 4 liquids. Put each hard candy in the liquid and see which hard candy dissolves quickest. Record which one dissolves quickest and we record the time it takes.
  2. Arrange a time, place, and what room temperature we will test it in.
  3. Create 4 different liquids and hard candies we will test it in.
  4. We will watch the hard can while it is in the liquid and we will record everything on a camera or on a rough draft chart.

Materials:

Sprite: 75 cents a can                                 Jolly Rancher: 5 cents each

Vinegar: 85 cents                                       life saver: $3

Water: free                                                 tootsie pops: $1

Water with salt: free                                  Blow pops: $1

Independent Variable: which hard candy dissolves the quickest.

Dependant variable: the time that the hard candy dissolves.

Controlled Variable: Same room, same temperature, same liquids, same candies, same expiration date, bought at the same place, same brand, and same clock.

Purpose: To find out what hard candy disolves the fatest.

Data and Method: In order to get the answer to this purpose, 5 different types of hard candy will be put in different types of liquids to see which candy disolves the fatest in each type of liquid.  The different types of liquids are used to simulate the saliva in a persons mouth.

Interest: We are interested in this topic because we both like hard candy and so do our friends. We want to know the answer because we want to know if we wanted to have a long lasting candy, to know which one to chose, and if we wanted a short lasting candy, to know which one to choose. We would also like to tell our friends the answer to because they might want to know just as much as we do.

Maddy Ryder and Dona Pecoraro Hypothesis

due date: 3-3-11

I believe that the jolly rancher will dissolve the quickest in vinegar. We belive this will happen because vinegar is not that thick so it will probabl dissolve quick because it wont get stuck in the thicknest of it. Also, one time in the summer my cousin wanted to do an experiment and she put a jolly rancher in her drink and it dissolved very fast so that is also why we think that jolly ranchers will dissolve faster than the rest. So since we experienced this we feel like our hypothesis is right.

The researchers say that hard candy probably dissolves very fast in hot water. We also tested the hard candies in cold water so maybe it will dissolve quick in regular water because hot water and regualr water are like the same. The jolly rancher will probably dissolve very quick to because it is smaller than all the rest of the candies and is also very light. The jolly rancher also dissolves quick in the mouth to so that is why we think the jolly rancher will dissolve quick.
